Intrepid Traveller

The Intrepid Traveller
This is my way of bringing back wonderful memories. Although I have many memories and photos before this blog began, it was when I got to grips with the combination of the technology of the digital camera and blogging that I realised that I could record some of those special memories. Some people like to keep albums, others put their photos in the cloud but I like to research where I’ve gone, and write something about it so that the memories come to life every time I want a ‘happy fix’.

I’ve had feedback from friends about memories that have been triggered for them – about places where they were born, places they’ve gone to for a holiday or places where we’ve been together.

I hope you enjoy some of my stories.

Melbourne 20-28 October 2012

While I was relaxing in England in the summer of 2012 I received an email from Jenny Clarke, World Number 1 Association Croquet champion. Whether the numbers were down or whether she hadn’t seen me play, I’ll never know. But the email strongly encouraged me to apply for a wild card to enter the 1st Women’s Association Croquet World Championships that were to be held in Melbourne in October 2012. She said I wouldn’t stand any chance of winning, but the experience would be memorable. Continue reading

Singapore 14-18 September 2012
The flight from Slovenia to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to Singapore took all day but I had good seats and an easy journey with a bit of sleep for a change. Adam was at a meeting when I arrived and Janice was shopping so I sat and relaxed on their balcony and read my book until they arrived. It was great to have a lazy evening and an early dinner and catch up with all the news. Continue reading

Slovenia 9-13 September 2012

So where is Slovenia? I discovered that heaps of people, like me, don’t really know. It’s actually bordered by Italy on the west, Austria in the north, Hungary on the north-east and Croatia on the south. It’s almost land locked, except for a small amount of coast close to Trieste on the Italian coast in the west. Its capital is Maribor which is in the north-east, close to the Austrian border. London 1-9 September 2012

There were still more highlights to enjoy during my last few days in London. The first was a visit to The Globe Theatre – a treat for me from all three girls – to see the Taming of the Shrew. In all my years living in England I’d never been to The Globe so this was a very special treat. We walked along the banks of the Thames, had a leisurely meal and sat in very good seats to enjoy an excellent performance. We even saw Judi Dench who was sitting not far away.
